Pneumatic Conveying Systems for Material Transfer

Convey Powders, Pellets, and Granules Over Long-Distances with Less Moving Parts

Pneumatic Conveyance Systems
Carolina Material Technologies provides pneumatic conveying systems designed for the pneumatic transport of bulk solids and powders, including Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveyors, Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveyors, Pneumatic Conveying Venturi Eductors, Airslides, and other Pressure and Vacuum Systems. Our experts at CMT are knowledgeable in how various materials behave during pneumatic conveying, which allows us to quote the best method of conveying (dilute or dense phase), and the type of gas mover (for example blower, fan or compressor).

Dilute-Phase Pneumatic Conveying

Dilute-phase conveying is one of the most common methods used in material transfer. The Dilute-Phase process uses large amounts of air to convey a relatively small amount of material at high velocities through the system while being suspended in air. Dilute-Phase Conveying is often referred to as suspension flow because the particles are held in suspension in the air as they are blown or vacuumed through the pipeline. A wide range of materials can be conveyed with a dilute-phase pneumatic conveying system. Products commonly conveyed in dilute phase systems include flour, resins, talc, sugar, chemicals, plastic pellets, ground feed, and other granular or palletized materials. A dilute-phase pneumatic conveying system will generally be lower in capital cost when compared to a dense phase conveying system.

Dilute Phase Conveying Features:

  • Low Pressure, High Velocity
  • Low Product to Air Ratio
  • Air Velocities of 3,200-8,000 Ft/Min
  • Low, Medium, or High Conveying Rates (1-50 tons/hr)
  • Operating Pressures in range of 5-12 PSIG (positive) or negative pressures of 4-12” Hg
  • Air Mover: Positive Displacement Blower/Exhauster or Fan
  • Best for Low Density Materials or Electrostratic Product
  • Talc, Sugar,  HDPE Powders, Bleaching Earth, Lime, Pellets, Coffee Beans, Soda Ash
  • Rotary Airlock Valve (Limited to Pressure Differencial of 15 Psig)

Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying

The velocity at which particles fall from suspension from the air stream is referred to as "saltation velocity". This principle distinguishes Dense Phase Conveying from Dilute Phase Conveying (in which particles are suspended in the air stream). Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying is one of the most common methods used in material transfer. Unlike dilute phase conveying systems that typically use larger amounts of air to move relatively small amounts of material at high velocities in suspension, dense phase offers the enormous advantage of efficiently "pushing" a much denser concentration of bulk solids at relatively low velocities through a conveying line. This method is typically selected over Dilute-Phase if the material particles being handled are friable or fragile.

Dense Phase Conveying Features:

  • High Pressure, Low Velocity
  • High Product to Air Ratio
  • Air Velocities of 200-2,000 Ft/Min
  • High Conveying Rates (Up to 100 Tons/Hr)
  • Best for Abrasive Products and Materials Subject to Degradation
  • Operating pressures Up to 125 psig
  • Air Mover: Transporter (No Pressure Limitation)
  • Optimal for Abrasive or Fragile Product
  • Cement, Bentonite, Quartz, Fly Ash, Alumina, Coal, Ceramic
  • Conveying Distance Up to 10,000 Ft or Longer

Components and Spare Parts

Fox Venturi Eductors

Fox Venturi Eductors are commonly used to feed powders, pellets, and bulk solids into a pneumatic conveying system. Venturi Eductors are commonly used in place of rotary valves where airlocks simply cannot perform adequately. Venturi eductor systems can be used to convey product at up to 15 tons per hour over distances up to 500 feet. The greatest advantage of the Fox Venturi is that it eliminates blowback , has no moving parts, and operates almost entirely maintenance-free.

Hammertek Smart Elbows®

Reduce wear in your pneumatic conveying lines with HammerTek® Corporation's SMART ELBOW® Deflection Elbow. The HammerTek Smart Elbow’s design uses a spherical chamber slightly beyond the 90° or 45° turn that creates a rotating ball of material suspended in the air that allows the chamber to capture a portion of the airflow traveling through the line and cause it to double back into the material stream, creating a deflection zone that eliminates elbow wear and product degradation.

Pneumatic Conveying Magnets

Pneumatic Conveying magnets are commonly used in processing applications to ensure product purity and protect machinery from tramp metal damage. CMT offers five different types of pneumatic conveying line magnets from Industrial Magnetics, including the Bullet® Magnet, Pneumatic Line Housing manget, Exposed Pole Tube magnet, 4JIT Bullet® Magnet, and the 4JIT Vacuum Line Magnet.

Air Slide Conveyors

Pneumatic Conveying Air Slides provide some of the most efficient and practical methods of conveying bulk powder material. Whirl-Slides are high volume conveyors designed to move powders and free-flowing products along a nearly horizontal plane. The simply designed, rectangular enclosure eliminates airborne dust particles during transport of products. Materials are moved on a low pressure "cushion of air" admitted through a fluidizing membrane which has no moving parts, eliminating associated wear.
